Journalists invited to engage with the world’s most talented mathematicians and computer scientists in Heidelberg!

Foundation awards travel grants to journalists to cover the 7th Heidelberg Laureate Forum

Heidelberg. This September, recipients of the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize are invited to gather in Heidelberg to meet with 200 young researchers from all over the world at the 7th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF). In order to reach a broader, more international audience, the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) provides a select number of travel grants for journalists to cover the event, creating a space to interact with the preeminent scientists of mathematics and computer science. The 7th HLF will take place from September 22-27, 2019, and applications for the coveted travel grants are accepted until May 20, 2019.

The HLF offers a carefully selected group of young researchers in mathematics and computer science the extraordinary chance to meet the preeminent scientists in their fields for one week of cross-generational, scientific dialogue. What distinguishes the HLF from traditional scientific conferences is the unique atmosphere that inspires a blend of acute scientific discussions and informal interactions among the participants. Lectures, workshops and panel discussions embolden scientifically driven debate, while various social events encourage the participants to pursue their discourse outside the lecture halls and to get to know each other.

After carefully evaluating each application, the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation offers a select number of travel grants to enable journalists to report on this compelling networking event for the pinnacle in computer science and mathematics. Grants cover travel costs as well as board and accommodation during the stay in Heidelberg from September 21-28, 2019.

Until May 20, 2019, journalists from all over the world are invited to apply, irrespective of their media affiliation (print, TV, online, radio). The applications must include the following: a short CV, three samples of work (indicating respective medium), a synopsis of publications to date (indicating respective medium), planned contributions regarding the HLF as well as a preliminary travel itinerary including estimated costs.

Please send travel grant applications to: media@heidelberg-laureate-forum.org
Application deadline: May 20, 2019

Background
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) annually organizes the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), which is a networking event for mathematicians and computer scientists from all over the world. The 7th Heidelberg Laureate Forum will take place from September 22 to 27, 2019. The HLFF was established and is funded by the German foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), which promotes natural sciences, mathematics and computer science. The scientific partners of the HLFF are the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) and Heidelberg University. The HLF is strongly supported by the award-granting institutions, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the International Mathematical Union (IMU), and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA).
